Microsoft GS Wavetable Synth
is the MIDI synth that is bundled with Windows releases. It is a very laggy synth that nobody uses to play any song with a large amount of notes, unless it is a "challenge". In Windows 98, its polyphony was 32 notes, whereas in Windows XP its polyphony was increased to 64 notes. This is the only difference the two OS's when playing with this synth though. It contains a 1991 sound set which was created by Roland and considered to be high quality at the time. Some better alternatives do exist now, such as Coolsoft VirtualMIDISynth and BASSMIDI.
